Can Zombies Run?

Posted March 31, 2010 at 11:25 pm by Jeff

Do Zombies Run? If you’re reading this article chances are you’ve had the discussion. Do zombies run? I thought it was something interesting enough to write about here.  Feel free as always to comment and make fun of me if you’d like :) .

I have always enjoyed the Romero Zombie, the slow zombie. I know the argument the fast, agile, strong zombie is much more terrifying but is it realistic or as realistic as we can get for a discussion on zombies. There are several factors to look into when discussing this topic. For one, what happens when a human turns?  Rigor Mortis sets in on average around 3 to 4 hours after death. This statement alone would in some peoples opinions cause them to believe zombies can not run, but there is something they are all missing. Rigor Mortis ceases after about 24 – 72 hours.

If as some believe a person is slowly being turned to a zombie as they are closer to death, wouldn’t this also start up the Rigor Mortis process? So couldn’t a zombie start out slow, speed slightly up once Rigor Mortis ceases and then slow down again once the body completely breaks down?

My personal belief is there is way to much against the zombie to allow them to even have a nice stride. If its a real zombie, a person who dies and comes back, and not a rage virus like on 28 days later.. I do not believe we have to worry about “runners”.  Depending on body type, ie. leg size, I think we can safely assume most can out run a zombie. The only things to keep in mind is a zombie has no endurance limits and we still don’t know how long a zombie will take until it fully breaks down. Can we find a safe place and wait out the zombie apocalypse?

Zombie Films have still got it

Posted August 29, 2009 at 1:57 am by Jeff

It’s 3 in the morning and I’m sitting here watching Diary Of The Dead. I must say George Romero and more so Zombie films in general still have “IT”. It isn’t just one thing. They have several factors that make “IT”. They still after all of these years have the ability to scare the “hell” out of us.

When There is No More Room In Hell The Dead Will Walk The Earth

Zombie films have an ability to make people scared. Unlike other horror films Zombie films give you that what if feeling. The feeling that all of this is just a second away from happening… or even worse, it already is happening. They unlike any other horror film reflect society in a very clever introspective way and that I believe makes everything that much more real and scary

Looking In The Mirror

Romero loves to point out society and its good and bad characteristics in his films. In Night of The Living Dead Romero focuses on the racism and patriarchy all over America. In Dawn of the Dead Romero focused more on Consumerism and Capitalism. Romero isn’t the only writer and director who focues on including these reflections into zombie films. its been a common practice among films lately.

Don’t Be Afraid To Run

Zombies are real people. This is what makes it that much more horrifying. Zombies don’t eat flesh out of an evil animosity towards the living but out of an innate hunger. The zombies try to continue on their roles by doing it is they were used to doing all the time. It is what draws us to the zombie film.

All I know for sure is Zombies are scary as hell.

A Real Zombie Coverup in America

Posted May 16, 2009 at 11:57 pm by Jeff

I wanted to write about an amazing story. This story may or may not be true.  The story was taken off an internet forum. I understand what you are thinking….. an internet forum, come on man. The truth is this story is likely not to be true but in my gut I want to let you guys decide.  Below is the actual story word for word.

“This is the story about my encounter with a “zombie”. I put zombie in quotations only because I’m assuming that that is what I saw that day. And, I do mean zombie as in “George Romero zombie”. That is, a corpse that has come to life with a hunger for human flesh. I know it sounds crazy and I bet your saying to yourself, “Wow, this guy is a case” and “What!? Zombies aren’t real! This is some fake shit right here!” Those are logical reactions, I know. But, if what I saw that day wasn’t a zombie, then I don’t know what else it could have been.

Back in August of 2003, I was living in Houston,Texas. I had a friend who had, a week before, been in a pretty crazy car accident. He was holed up at St. Joe’s medical facility and I had been coming to see him regularly throughout the week. There was nothing strange about this hospital. It’s about what one would expect when it comes to a hospital. But that day something odd was going on. I had weird vibes all around me as soon as i got out of my car.

There were two Army trucks parked near the main entrance. One was a classic Humvee, while the other was one of those large transport trucks. They were both backed into the parking spaces, their engines were idling, and they were both occupied by drivers as if they would be ready to launch from the parking spaces at any moment. As I walked passed the two trucks, I noticed a lot of “official” looking people, like feds or something, hanging out outside the main entry. A few were talking on cell phones while others were smoking cigarettes and/or looking menacing.

I continued to walk through this strange sight with the strangest feeling of being watched. The doors slid open for me and I continued on through the lobby passing the front desk. One of the ladies behind the desk told me that I couldn’t go into the south hall of level 2. My friend was located in the north hall in room 222.

After my encounter with the lady at the front desk, I turned toward the elevator doors located half way down the hallway. I remember thinking to myself, “So I couldn’t be in the south hall? What? Why did they stop me like that? ” This was my fourth time to visit my friend and both times before had been smooth sailing up to his room.

Anyway, so I got to the elevator and got in. Just before the door shut, one of those “official” guys ran up to keep the door from shutting. Five more of those guys joined me on the elevator. I moved myself to the corner and found myself quite nervous of them. One of them had asked me which floor I was headed to and he pushed the button. It seemed like the longest elevator ride of my life. These guys were silent towers hovering over me. Finally, the door opened and they exited left. I exited right. I continued on to my friends room and looked back just in time to see them turn a corner.

I got to my friends room and told him about the weird things going on. He agreed that it had been a strange day for him as well. Apparently, that morning, one of the nurses had left the door to his room open after checking on him. At one point, he heard someone yell, “Come here!” and then a group of “official looking” guys came running down the hall passing his room almost knocking over some poor nurse who happened to be walking by at the same time. An hour later after that he said that one of those men came into his room and looked around for about five minutes without saying a word. About ten minutes later, one of the nurses came in and told him that there was a possibility that they would have to move him to another floor in a different room. When asked why, she told him that there was some sort of “renovation problem”. Whatever that means, right?

After hanging out for a bit, I decided to leave. When I got back to the elevator I suddenly had a moment of curiosity. So I kept walking. I headed in the same direction those guys went after I got off the elevator on the way up. As I got closer to the corner, the one I saw them go around, I heard some sort of commotion going on. I remember thinking that I probably shouldn’t be going down here. I wish to this day that I had stopped and went back. But I kept going.

I remember turning the corner and everything seeming to go in slow motion. I had stopped in my tracks, eyes wide, jaw dropped because I couldn’t believe what i was seeing. There in front of me, maybe about four doors down, on the floor was a patient, whose back was turned to me, hunched over the body of another man who was lying on his back in a pool of blood. Circling around these two figures on the floor, were three “officials” steadily and carefully keeping there distance. They didn’t notice me standing there until my cell phone went off. I snapped out of it and looked down at my pant pocket. I looked up. Not only were the “officials” staring at me, but so was the person who had been hunched over the bloody body. I’ll never forget what that “person” looked like. It’s eyes were colorless…black almost. It’s pale face looked tired and worn. In it’s mouth was a fleshy piece of human, bloody and dripping. I peed my pants.

One of the men yelled for me to leave. I stood there motionless, until, from behind two men grabbed me. They pulled me backwards away from that frightening scene and dragged me back to the elevator.

One of them told me to go home as they shoved me into the elevator.

Just as the door shut, one of them pulled out a walkie-talkie device and shouted into it, “Shut this floor down!”

I remember sitting down on the floor of the elevator replaying what just happened over and over. All I could think about was it’s face. It’s cold, dead eyes staring at me. I didn’t even realize that the elevator had moved it’s way down to level one. The doors slid open and more of those official guys were there. They picked me up to my feet and escorted me to the door. I remember one of the men telling me to have a good day! Ha, can you believe that?!

As I got into my car, four unmarked white minivans came rushing towards the entrance. Needless to say, I left there in a bit of a hurry. I wasn’t about to stick around. As I drove away from the parking lot, a fire truck whizzed by me. Pulling out my cell phone, I realized I had a missed call from my friend in the hospital. I called him.

I asked him if everything was alright and if he could see or hear anything. The door to his room was shut but he could hear some yelling and commotion. I almost told him what I had seen but I stopped because I had realized that he wouldn’t believe what I had seen. No one would. The “officials” probably knew that. If I was the only “civilian” witness to this they could let me go with no problem. No one would believe what I had seen. That’s why they didn’t try to “debrief” me. That’s why they just sent me on my way. Nothing here to see. Keep moving.

Later, that night I watched the local news and national news to see if anybody would report the story. It never came. What did come was much more damning. Yet, it didn’t surprise me at all. The story the authorities released to the media had something to do with some poor doc who got his head sliced off by a malfunctioning elevator! Here’s the archived story from CNN.

Editors Note: It appears the story was on cnn originally but is no longer on the site, I did however search and found a ton of sites about this accident. Here are just a few.

http://www.click2houston.com/news/2412223/detail.html

http://www.snopes.com/horrors/freakish/elevator.asp

A couple days after the incident, I went to visit my friend again. I remember the feeling I had as I returned and walked through the hospital doors. This time there were no “officials” around. The lady at the front desk told me that the second floor was closed for “renovations” and that my friend had been moved to a different room on a different floor. When I found him, I told him about the zombie. Of course, he didn’t believe me. I kept going on and on about it until I realized that I was making him uncomfortable, so I just dropped it. Before I left the hospital that day, I stopped by the front desk and talked to the two ladies there. I had told them that I had heard about the “incident” in the news and that I was sorry. I then asked if they had known the doctor who got his head sliced off. They said they didn’t. They said they didn’t even know the elevator was screwed up because people used it all day long that day.

and that’s my story. what do you think? other than “uh, dude, your crazy.”.”

I want to put my two cents on the story. The timeline from when he wrote this to when it was first published works out perfectly. The writer is obviously believing of the story. I understand that by putting these links up online it can potentially bring back bad memories for the family, I just want to know what really happened. One of the articles about this did mention the official cause of death was blunt force head trauma. It seems very very odd to me. From everything I have read on this it could seriously be one of the first real cases I’ve heard of a Zombie Coverup in the United States of America or it could be a hoax but at least we are putting the information out there for everyone.

Night Of The Living Dorks

Posted January 29, 2009 at 4:39 pm by Jeff

This Germany film called Die Nacht der lebenden Loser or translated Night Of The Living Dorks. This film is so funny. Its actually a parady of Zombie films. Its great. Its not the best movie and I really wouldn’t even give it more than 2 stars for a horror film its still pretty entertaining.

Three school friends Phillip (Tino Mewes), Wurst (Manuel Cortez), and Konrad (Thomas Schmieder) are the nerds of the school. They are picked on and don’t have any social skills. Phillip desires the beautiful Uschi (Nadine Germann).  Wurst is Phillips pot smoking friend. Konrad lists all his humilation in a book.  When phillips neighbor Rebecca  (Collien Fernades) performs voodoo phillip and his friends think its a joke. When they have a fatal accident they realise it wasn’t a joke. They are all zombies and they must figure out how to become human again before its too late.

I really did enjoy the movie as a comedy. Its worth watching with you and a few friends.

5 scientific reasons a zombie apocolypse could actually happen

Posted November 23, 2008 at 2:13 pm by Jeffrey

This is a very interesting somewhat comical article about real reasons a zombie apocolypse could occur. I hope you enjoy. You can view the entire article at the original page via [Cracked.com]

We found out recently that if you try to leave a little kid in a graveyard late at night, he’ll freak out. Even if you offer to leave him a gun to protect himself. Why? It’s because on some instinctual level, all humans know it’s just a matter of time until the zombies show up.

Our culture is full of tales of the undead walking the Earth, from our religions to our comic books. But, some sort of zombie apocalypse isn’t actually possible, right?

Right?

Guys?

Actually, yes. It’s quite possible. Here’s five ways it could happen, according to science.

#5.
Brain Parasites

As seen in …
Resident Evil IV

What are they?
Parasites that turn victims into mindless, zombie-like slaves are fairly common in nature. There’s one called toxoplasmosa gondii that seems to devote its entire existence to being terrifying.

This bug infects rats, but can only breed inside the intestines of a cat. The parasite knows it needs to get the rat inside the cat (yes, we realize this sounds like the beginning of the most fucked-up Dr. Seuss poem ever) so the parasite takes over the rat’s freaking brain, and intentionally makes it scurry toward where the cats hang out. The rat is being programmed to get itself eaten, and it doesn’t even know.

Of course, those are just rats, right?

How it can result in zombies:
Hey, did we mention that half the human population on Earth is infected with toxoplasmosa, and don’t know it? Hey, maybe you’re one of them. Flip a coin.

Oh, also, they’ve done studies and shown that the infected see a change in their personality and have a higher chance of going batshit insane.

Chances this could cause a zombie apocalypse:
Humans and rats aren’t all that different; thats why they use them to test our drugs. All it takes is a more evolved version of toxoplasmosa, one that could to do us what it does to the rats. So, imagine if half the world suddenly had no instinct for self-preservation or rational thought. Even less than they do now, we mean.

If you’re comforting yourself with the thought that it may take forever for such a parasite to evolve, you’re forgetting about all the biological weapons programs around the world, intentionally weaponizing such bugs. You’ve got to wonder if the lab workers don’t carry out their work under the unwitting command of the toxoplasmosa gondii already in their brains. If you don’t want to sleep at night, that is.

You may be protesting that technically these people have never been dead and thus don’t fit the dictionary definition of “zombies,” but we can assure you that the distinction won’t matter a whole lot once these groaning hordes are clawing their way through your windows.

#3.
The Real Rage Virus

As seen in …
28 Days Later

What is it?
In the movie, it was a virus that turned human beings into mindless killing machines. In real life, we have a series of brain disorders that do the same thing. They were never contagious, of course. Then, Mad Cow Disease came along. It attacks the cow’s spinal cord and brain, turning it into a stumbling, mindless attack cow.

And, when humans eat the meat …

How it can result in zombies:
When Mad Cow gets in humans, they call it Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. Check out the symptoms:

  • Changes in gait (walking)
  • Hallucinations
  • Lack of coordination (for example, stumbling and falling)
  • Muscle twitching
  • Myoclonic jerks or seizures
  • Rapidly developing delirium or dementia

Sure, the disease is rare (though maybe not as rare as we think) and the afflicted aren’t known to chase after people in murderous mobs. Yet.

But, it proves widespread brain infections of the Rage variety are just a matter of waiting for the right disease to come along.

Chances this could cause a zombie apocalypse:
If the whole sudden, mindless violence idea seems far-fetched, remember that you are just one brain chemical (serotonin) away from turning into a mindless killing machine (they’ve tested it by putting rats in Deathmatch-style cages and watching them turn on each other). All it would take is a disease that destroys the brain’s ability to absorb that one chemical and suddenly it’s a real-world 28 Days Later.

So, imagine such an evolved disease, which we’ll call Super Mad Cow (or, Madder Cow) getting a foothold through the food supply. Say this disease spreads through blood-on-blood contact, or saliva-on-blood contact. Now you have a Rage-type virus that can be transmitted with a bite.

Just like the movie. With one bite, you’re suddenly the worst kind of zombie:

A fast zombie.

#2.
Neurogenesis

As seen in …
Laboratories around the world.

What is it?
You know all that conversy out there about stem cell research? Well, the whole thing with stem cells is that they can basically be used to re-generate dead cells. Particularly of interest to zombologists like ourselves is neurogenesis, the method by which they can re-grow dead brain tissue.

You can see where this is going.

How it can result in zombies:
You wanted the undead to make an appearance in this article? Well, here you go, you creepy bastards.

Science can pretty much save you from anything but brain death; they can swap out organs but when the brain turns to mush, you’re gone. Right?

Well, not for long. They’re already able to re-grow the brains of comatose head trauma patients until they wake up and walk around again.

Couple that with the new ability to keep a dead body in a state of suspended animation so that it can be brought back to life later, and soon we’ll be able to bring back the dead, as long as we get to them quickly enough.

That sounds great, right? Well, this lab dedicated to “reanimation research” (yes, that’s what they call it) explains how the process of “reanimating” a person creates a problem. It causes the brain to die off from the outside in. The outside being the cortex, the nice part of you that makes humans human. That just leaves the part that controls basic motor function and primitive instincts behind.

Reanimation research (artist’s rendering)

You don’t need the cortex to survive; all you need is the stem and you’ll still be able to mindlessly walk and eat and enjoy Grey’s Anatomy. This is how chickens can keep walking around after they’ve been beheaded (including one case where the chicken lived for 18 months without a head).

So, you take a brain dead patient, use these techniques to re-grow the brain stem, and you now have a mindless body shambling around, no thoughts and no personality, nothing but a cloud of base instincts and impulses.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is what we like to call a real, live, undead fucking zombie. So there.

Chances this could cause a zombie apocalypse:
Think about it. Under every legal system in the world, all rights and responsibilities are terminated at death. All it takes is someone with resources and a need for a mindless workforce of totally obedient slave labor.

How long until somebody tries this? We’re betting somebody in the world, maybe North Korea, will have a working zombie by Christmas.
