Quarantine Review
For many hard core horror fans, Quarantine is nothing more than a remake of a successful indie spanish horror film, but I fully disagree. Quarantine is an awesome movie that just works. The plot if you would call it that is straightforward. Television reporter Angela Vidal played by Jennifer Carpenter and her cameraman played by Steve Harris are assigned to shadow a few Los Angeles Fire Fighters. A 911 call takes them to an apartment building. They have been called on account of horrifying screams in the apartment complex. They are soon attacked by a woman who they later determine is infected with a type of rabies on steroids. They find themselves quarantined in the building by the CDC. Everything is turned off and there is no information getting in or out. The only evidence left from the death filled night is the video tape from the camera-man.
The story is a copy from the original [REC’ but there are differences. The story does become its own. It looks like although Sony wanted to copy the original movie, the director, John Dowdle wants to capture the true horrifying essence of the film, and that he does. He captures what made it scary and I would even go as far as to say adds to it. The acting as a whole felt genuine or as close as one could expect in a situation like this without actually being in it.
Despite everything I just said Quarantine had a couple weak points. One of these would have to be the lead in the film, Jennifer Carpenter. Carpenter while at times believable also had moments of horrible sometimes comical acting. I will say no one can scream like Jenny can. Overall I feel like this movie was much more than a re-make. It was a great quality job by first time Director Dowdle and a great job by all the actors in this film. It all works, now go see it.
