Amit Baadkar was the director, writer, and actor in his short zombie film we originally posted here. You can view the short film here forthedeadtravelfast.com/zombie-apartment/
Here are the thinkings of the director and writer of the zombie apartment.
Hmm so where do I start. I made this bloody flick during the summer semester for my editing concepts class. We had to make a 2-5 min video like a music video or a documentary or just a short film. We had like 10 days to come up with a rough cut. So I had bought this nice HD camera Canon HV20 for doing some of my VFX stuff last year and this was a great opportunity to put it to good use. Oh great camera btw. I mean its not pro stuff but it’s the best HD camera under 1000 bucks. I’m a great fan of Horror Sci-Fi genre and wanted to make something in that vein.
I came up with this zombie story inspired by several flicks like 28 days later, dawn of the dead and REC. I didn’t want to spend too much cash on this thing. Just wanted to do shots that were realistically possible for me. So I called my best pals Nikhil Sinha, Jeet Sorap and Dhruvi Shah. I cast Nikhil as the star Zombie ..Cuz, well, he just suited the role. Myself as the main character and Dhruvi shah as the female human/zombie. Jeet was my makeup artist for the Zombie and also DP for the corridor shot. Frankly speaking I really did not plan out the shots that much. No storyboards, nothing .We just framed the shots as we went along. Basically the story was divided in to 3 parts, the first one at the leads characters house, Second one, the Zombie struggle in the corridor and the last one at the female characters home.
Corridor struggle
My apartment building had this really narrow, scary looking corridor that was perfect for the corridor struggle part. Makeup was a really important part for this film and we spent a lot of time on that. Dhruvi brought all her makeup stuff; I got some red paint, thinner and fake blood. Jeet mixed and matched all that stuff and started painting Nikhil’s face. Once that was done I prepped Jeet and Nikhil and started the shoot .we didn’t use a tripod. I wanted to give it that freaky hand held look like cloverfield, Rec and Blair witch project. Jeet did a great job with the camera and Nikhil…well what can I say he’s a natural Zombie. There were times during the struggle where I really felt like I was going to die. He really pulled it off.. The shivering, the sounds, the deadness in his eyes. It was a great shoot. Overall we ended up splattering a lot of blood on the walls and on ourselves. Poor Nikhil ended up scrapping his knees pretty bad. We were using a real knife so we had to be extra careful. It was fun (Not so much fun for the landlady though). There was a part in the film where there’s a dead corpse (Jeet) rested against the wall. I needed a really bloody mess for this shot and I was not inclined to actually do this on set so being a Visual effects student I faked the shot .I took a still photograph of Jeet lying against the wall, photoshoped blood and stuff in it and added fake camera shake and voila. Also the flies, which I quickly created in AfterEffects.
End scene
The last scene was what we shot second. Dhruvi was going to be in it and she was excited. Jeet did the makeup and anyone who’s not acting held the camera. I’m a great fan of POV (point of view shots) and I used em quite a bit in this film. This scene had some VFX shots. There is a shot where I wanted the zombie to raise his head with a knife stuck in his eye. We could have done it with makeup and props but we didn’t have time to do it and didn’t have any materials to do it .I decided to add a Computer Generated (CG) knife in post production . One good thing was that I could use this shot for my Matchmoving class as a final project. So I had Nikhil raise his bloody head without the knife. I then tracked this shot, Then created a CG knife and wound and composited them on the face. There was another shot where there is blood splatter on the camera lens. Obviously I can’t splatter blood on my camera so I did this in post. Was really easy actually. Just had to find pictures of blood splatters, add focus blur and composite it in. The grand finale had Nikhil and Dhruvi screaming their guts out, which looked hilarious on set though. Had to take several takes cuz we couldn’t help ourselves from laughing.
Beginning Room Scene
The first shot was done in my room. I had my friend Mahendra Bhadrecha do the camera work. Were easy shots really. Just had my monitor screen in front of my face to give a nice lighting. Yeah that’s about it.
Well I spent the rest of the time editing and doing the VFX for the shots. Took me a while to do the ‘Knife in the eye’ shot. But I got em all done. Spent 15 days on the whole project from conception to final. I found this really cool zombie sound resource online with all the zombie snarling, and biting sound FX that I needed and took music from several soundtracks from Akira yamaoka’s Silent hill tracks, 28 days later soundtrack. Yes that’s why I cant put this film up for anything majorly commercial. I’m going to have a friend compose some music scores for me sometime later. Well it was a great experience. Always had dreamed of making a film like this. I want to thank my pals Nikhil, Jeet, Dhruvi, Mahendra and my editing instructor Chris Sollars for their help. I also want to extend special thanks to my parents for their support and encouragement.
Cheer’s,
Amit Baadkar,
